Start with Doyle and have a look around which other classical (or obscure) authors you can find there. I like the format of the pages better than Gutenberg.org texts, because novels are divided into chapters instead of one single long

After reading nerak_rose's "you know you're from..." lists, I did some googeling and found this site. It has lists from a lot of different countries and I think it's interesting what kind of stuff people from those countries found important to include.
